9-10th Grade Power Writing Curriculum

Throughout the course, students will practice and improve their facility in a variety of writing genres, or types. These include the persuasive and analytical essay, the research paper, reportage, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Towards the end of the semester, students will learn to write essays similar to those required on the SAT.

The course opens with a review of basic writing skills. Among these are the topic sentence, paragraph organization, sentence variation, punctuation and other important grammatical skills. After the initial review sessions, students will be assigned classwork and homework in the various genres described above.

Teacher-led instruction on each genre is supported by examples from professional publications. Another important aspect of this course is teacher-led, peer critiques of student work which enables students to sharpen their own writing skills. Each class includes a lesson on grammar and includes an introduction to fifteen new vocabulary words.
