9th Grade English Curriculum

  This course is designed to take the student from the concrete to the abstract. Students will be given the necessary skills to properly take notes, analyze literature on a deeper level, understand literary terms and devices, and increase their vocabulary. They will read a variety of materials including, The Joy Luck Cub, Of Mice and Men, and Animal Farm in order to understand the novel, the novella and the concept of allegory. Additionally, through selected short stories, myths, and poetry, they will explore elements of mythology, archetype and identity. Students will be required to read 15-30 pages per night and respond to a variety of questions. They are also required follow the activities prescribed for active reading.
